Marie Freeman Saxon

Mrs. Marie Freeman Saxon of Atlanta, passed July 15, 2020. Graveside service will be held 10 AM Saturday, August 1, 2020 at  Lincoln Cemetery for family.

Marie Gertrude Freeman Saxon was the third daughter born to the late Reverend and Mrs. Robert F. Freeman on September 6, 1916 in Gaffney, South Carolina. She lived in several South Carolina towns due to her father’s profession as a Methodist minister. Her mother passed away when she was six.

Her father moved to Orangeburg South Carolina when he became pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. In Orangeburg, her father enrolled his children in the elementary school of Claflin College (later University). At that time, Claflin had an elementary school and a high school on the college campus.

She finished Claflin in 1937, earning a BS degree in Sociology. She came to Atlanta to attend Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University) to obtain the first of two Master’s degrees.

It was there she met the love of her life, Charles David Saxon Sr. of Brunswick Georgia. He was attending Morehouse College and at that time Morehouse students ate their meals in the Atlanta University dining hall. She married Charles in 1940 in Camden South Carolina. In 1942 they welcomed the first of three sons, Charles Jr, and later Robert and Eric.

In 1940, to avoid religious controversy, she being a Methodist and Charles a Baptist, decided to affiliate with the First Congregational Church, where a number of her Atlanta University Instructors were members. She was an active member of various boards (Diaconate) and organizations. A recipient of the “Henry N Brown Service Award”,  giving in recognition of her outstanding service to the church. She remained a faithful member until her death.

She began teaching in the Atlanta Public Schools in 1950 at David T Howard High School and retired as a Media Specialist in 1983.

Marie enjoyed and participated in numerous social and civic affiliations: Claflin University Alumnae Chapter, founding member of “Matrons Rendering Service” (MRS) social club, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Gate City Nursery Association, Fulton County Council on Aging, The Georgia Retired Teachers Association, Cascade Chapter of the AARP and the Mozley Park Exercise Class.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Charles Sr., her sisters, Grace and Olga and her brother Robert. Her survivors include: sons, Charles Jr., Robert and Eric (Marcia), grandchildren, Danielle (Migale) Norwood, Karlie (Desron) Thompson, Charles lll (Kim) Saxon, Dorie Saxon, Justin Saxon and Eric Saxon Jr. nieces and nephews Robert (Alice) Freeman lll, John (Denise) Freeman, Daryl (Linda), and Andrea (Vincent) Steward, six great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
