Her father moved to Orangeburg South Carolina when he became pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. In Orangeburg, her father enrolled his children in the elementary school of Claflin College (later University). At that time, Claflin had an elementary school and a high school on the college campus.

In 1942 they welcomed the first of three sons, Charles Jr, and later Robert and Eric.
In 1940, to avoid religious controversy, she being a Methodist and Charles a Baptist, decided to affiliate with the First Congregational Church, where a number of her Atlanta University Instructors were members. She was an active member of various boards (Diaconate) and organizations. A recipient of the “Henry N Brown Service Award”, giving in recognition of her outstanding service to the church. She remained a faithful member until her death.
