Obituary

Margaret Jewel Summerour

Mrs. Margaret Jewel Summerour of College Park, GA passed July 8, 2023.

On November 6, 1947, Edward & Jewel Simon, Sr. gave birth to Edward Jr’s baby sister, Margaret Jewel.  Margaret Jewel was a spunky kid who, at an early age, followed the beat of her own drummer.  She was also a very strong-willed woman.  She attended Washington High School and graduated in 1965.  She went on to study Business at DeVry Institute.  From there, she worked with her father Edward Sr. at The Atlanta Life Insurance Company until his death.  From there, she continued working and serving within his legacy with the company until her mother fell ill; then she cared for her mother full-time until her death.

At the start of her career, she met and married John Summerour Jr. and together they had daughter, Kenya.  Her mantra in life was to make sure her family was happy, healthy and productive.  Her success was found in the achievements of her family.  Her “Super Mom” powers kicked in and she raised Kenya to become an honor student and later to graduate from two universities.  She also helped provide guidance to her niece Carol which resulted in her being an honor student and graduating from two universities as well.  Kenya later gave birth to Margaret’s beloved grandson, Kendall.  As Kenya was a single mother too; Margaret further kicked in those “Super Mom” powers to help Kenya raise Kendall.  She was elated to recently see Kendall graduate from high school in May 2023.  He was accepted to 27 colleges and will be attending Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA in August.  Her guidance, love and support helped her family to achieve their accomplishments.

As you can tell, Margaret loved her family and loved serving as the matriarch after her mother’s passing.  She was affectionately known as the family’s secretary and news reporter.  She was the person who served as the family “internet service” even before it was invented.  She made sure she had all the information for anything her family needed.  She was the family protector.  She was an “uber” by foot and bus before it was invented.  She would walk or ride with us to the store, work, any event making sure we were safe.  She absolutely loved her family, and they loved her right back.  She also had a knack for being the “neighborhood” mom to her daughter and niece’s friends which garnered several affectionate nicknames, Auntie Baddie, SugarBear, Shug.  But the title she truly enjoyed the most was being known as NANA, the grandmother.

She was a very private and introverted person but when it came to her family, her feelings were cleared expressed extrovertly.  Over the years, she suffered from many health challenges and again, due to her usual protection of her family, she landed in the College Park HealthCare Facility. Her family was pleased that she made valuable friendships enjoying her golden years.

Margaret Jewel will surely be missed, and her memory will live on forever.  Her guidance, love, support and protection has sealed her family’s strength to keep making progress and to keep our family strong.  Her family will make sure to keep her legacy alive and to make her proud.  She lived her life the way she wanted.  She is survived by her big brother, Edward Jr., her daughter Kenya, her niece Carol (Kareem), her grandson Kendall, her nephews Ian and Eddie, a host of nieces/nephews in love (Dwight, Chico, Alfunza, Roland, Tasha, Ashley), sisters in love (Gracie and Patsy), bonus daughter (Tonya), cousins in Houston, TX, lifelong friends and her beloved College Park Healthcare Family.

Please know that your family is truly grateful for time we had with you on earth!

The family will honor her wishes with two private ceremonies.  The first with her College Park Healthcare family on July 13th and the other with her family on July 22nd.

REST IN PEACE.  WE LOVE YOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
