Alexis R. Smith-Balkum
Alexis Rosamond Smith Balkum, age 57, passed away in Marietta, GA, on December 22, 2020 due to Alzheimers disease. She was born January 10, 1963, in Tripoli, Libya, as a military brat and later naturalized as an American citizen. Family members predeceasing her include grandmother Wilhelmina Holmes Smith; grandfather Elworth E. Smith, Sr.; and father Major Elworth E. Smith, Jr. Ms. Balkum attended Greensboro Public Schools, NC; graduated Brookline High School, MA; graduated with a BS from NC A&T State University, NC; and graduated with an EMBA from the University of Georgia. She rose to become Vice President of Human Resources, Turner Broadcasting, Atlanta GA, and was an active choir member at Mt Paran Church of God, Atlanta, GA. She leaves behind her daughter Alexandra Brye Balkum; her son Aaron James Balkum; her mother Dr. Virginia Whatley Smith; her sister Sydney Reaves Smith; her brother Elworth E. Smith, III; four nieces and nephews Layla Smith; Umar Boone; Grayson Underwood Smith; and Elworth E. Smith, IV; and cousins Bernardine Booker Brown; Dr. Pamela Holmes; Jennifer Holmes; Renata Reid; Alvin Reid, Jr., and a host of other family and friends. Mrs. Balkum's remains will be carried to Smith-Hinnant Funeral Home, 512 MLK Jr. Drive, Greensboro, NC 27406 for service and interment.
