Michael Bernard Smith II, affectionately known as "Big Mike," was a man whose life was defined by love, passion, and service to others. Known for his huge smile, vibrant spirit, and dedication to his family and community, Michael, 46, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on December 23, 2024, surrounded by loved ones after a sudden medical emergency.

Michael was born in Miami, Florida, on September 28, 1978, to Susan and Michael Smith. He fondly remembered his mother's unwavering support and guidance throughout his life and carried her wisdom with him in all he did. He is survived by his beloved wife, Trolena Smith, his son, Michael Abraham Smith, his stepdaughter, Alysa Thomas, and his loving mother, Susan Smith. During Michael's time with us, he made a lasting impact and will be missed.

Michael grew up surrounded by loved ones who instilled strong family values, work ethics, and morals. He enjoyed spending time with family (Granddaddy P, Gramps, Grandma Jennie, Grandma Daisy, Aunt Jere, Auntie Annie, Auntie K, Uncle Pat, Uncle Darryl, Auntie Charlene and Uncle David) all who loved good food, cooking, and grilling! Michael grew up in Miami and attended New Way Fellowship Baptist Church, where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior & was baptized. He was actively involved in Sunday School, Children's church, Children's choir, royal ambassadors, youth choir, youth council, and the media ministry. It was at New Way that Michael was introduced to the Miami-Dade NAACP Youth Council where the seeds for community engagement were planted at the young age of five years old. As a child, Michael began to hone his skills as an entrepreneur, a fisherman, a swimmer, a grill master, and a future athlete. It was not until his 9th grade year that he really grew to love football. He played on the Central Rockets JV team in 9th grade, but by 10th grade, he was on the varsity team.

Michael graduated from Miami Central High School in 1996, where he was celebrated as both a brilliant magnet student and standout football player. His exceptional talent earned him a scholarship to Morehouse College, which provided him the opportunity to pursue his dreams of playing college football. During his time at Morehouse, Michael continued his dedication to Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service when he was initiated into the Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 1999. Michael went on to complete his studies and graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor's in Business in 2000.

Michael later established his home in the suburbs of Atlanta, where he made a significant impact on those around him. On July 21, 2008, Michael was blessed with the birth of his beloved son, Michael Abraham, who brought immense joy and pride into his life. Michael was proud of Michael Abraham and often spoke of his brilliant mind, discerning spirit, and gratitude for continuing his legacy through his son.

Michael had the joy of marrying his childhood crush, Trolena Brown, on March 28, 2015. He met her at the tender age of 5 years old while playing in Children's Church at New Way Fellowship. Michael said he always knew that one day she would be his wife. Their love story was one of destiny and deep connection, growing stronger with each passing year. They were looking forward to renewing their vows for their 10th anniversary in 2025, a testament to their enduring love and commitment to each other.

A successful entrepreneur, Michael founded Big Mike's BBQ and More, a community-centered business that brought joy to many through his culinary talents. He also co-founded the Morehouse Football Alumni Association (MFAA) with Dr. Emmanuel Rowe in 2008. Through initiatives like the MFAA Scholarship Gala, Michael helped raise over $200,000 to support scholar-athletes, combining his passions for football, service, and BBQ. Additionally, Michael was a founding member of the Miami Central Rockets Alumni Association, Atlanta Chapter.  He served proudly as the Vice President.

In addition to his accomplishments, Michael was known for his humor, generosity, and ability to bring people together. Whether mentoring youth, serving his community, or hosting friends and family at his BBQ events, Michael left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

While Big Mike left us far too soon, the impact he had on our community will be felt for years to come. Michael will be remembered by so many for his vibrant spirit, dedication to family, passion for football, and entrepreneurship. He leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration, touching the lives of countless friends and family throughout his journey.

A memorial service will be held to honor his life and contributions. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made directly to his family and the Michael B. Smith Foundation.

Michael leaves behind a host of family and friends who loved him deeply and will forever cherish his memory. His legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. As we come together to mourn his passing, let us find comfort in the countless joyful moments we shared and the lasting impact he made on each of our lives. Though he may be gone from our sight, Michael's spirit will remain alive in our hearts, guiding us through the days ahead and reminding us of the enduring power of love and friendshi p.
