Ernestine B. Banks
Mrs. Ernestine Brooks Banks of Atlanta, Georgia passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014.
Mrs. Ernestine B. Banks was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the only child of
Preston Brooks and Matilda Weaver Brooks. At a young age she joined
Cosmopolitan A. M. E. Church, where she maintained a lifelong membership
and provided devoted service in several auxiliaries.
Ernestine graduated from Spelman College in 1945 at the age of 20, with a
major in Home Economics. She continued her education at Atlanta University
where she earned a Master of Arts Degree in 1968 and Education Specialist
Degree in 1972. While a student at Spelman College, she met a Morehouse
College student, William Spurgeon Banks, who became her life partner, until his
death.
Mr. & Mrs. Banks dedicated their lives to providing quality education and
opportunities for Atlanta's children; he as a School Principal and she as a
classroom and Resource Teacher. Mrs. Banks taught at Walker Street,
Oglethorpe, and M. Agnes Jones Elementary Schools. In 1970, she became a
Resource Teacher with Atlanta's Comprehensive instructional Program where
she became a mentor for classroom teachers.
Ernestine enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and many countries in
Europe and the Caribbean. She was a member of several civic and social
organizations, including the Just Us Neighbors Club.
She was known for her engaging personality, artistic flair, and willingness to
help others. She enjoyed painting, scrapbooking, decorating, and gardening.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 12:00
p.m. at Cosmopolitan A. M. E. Church, 170 Vine Street, N.W., with the Rev. Dr.
Earle H. Ifill, P. E., Eulogist and Pastor Bruce L. Francis, M.Div., Pastor,
Officiating. Interment, Lincoln Cemetery.
The cortege will assemble at the church at 11:30 a.m. She leaves to cherish her
memory, Mr. Theodore Williams, a devoted God Son, and a host of cousins,
other relatives, friends and a supportive church family.
