Emily Singleton Chisholm departed this life in her home during the early morning hours on Thursday, January 5, 2012. The Homegoing Service will be held Wedensday, January 11, 2012 at 11:00AM at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, 306 Peyton Road, Southwest, The Very Reverend Robert C. Wright, Rector, officiating.
Emily was born on September 9, 1936 in Savannah, GA, the second of eight children, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Leroy and Angela Greene Singleton.
Emily accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Phillip Monumental AME Church in Savannah, Georgia and was an active member of the Sunday School and the Davis Choral Club. As a child, Emily loved to sing and participated in a chorale with her sister, Edith and performed at various churches and social events in the community.
Emily attended West Savannah Elementary School and graduated from Woodville High School in 1954 in Savannah. She received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Biology from Savannah State College in 1961, where she also joined the Delta Nu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Furthering her educational career, she earned a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan in 1974.
Emily married Willie Chisholm of Savannah, Georgia. From this union, a son, Kevin Dwayne Chisholm, and a daughter, Erika Joye Chisholm were born. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia when the children were very young. The marriage ended in divorce.
Emily's extensive background in scientific research earned her a notable 33-year career with the United States Center for Disease Control in Atlanta where she worked as a parasitologist and epidemiologist. She wrote and published several articles for scientific journals.
Emily had a strong sense of family, faith and community and joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church with her children where she was an active member until her passing. Her last positions with the Church, included memberships with the Daughters of the King, Saint Catherine/St. Cecelia's Circle, Citizens for All Seasons, the Ways and Means Committee and the Deltas of St. Paul. She was also a member of Christians Allied for Progressive Service, aka The CAPS.
She was devoted to her Alma Mater, Savannah State University, where her parents and all seven of her sisters and brothers attended. She served as the President of the Metro Atlanta Alumni Chapter, Treasurer and member of the Scholarship and Fund Raising Committees. Emily was known for selling raffle and event tickets to help raise funds for her beloved college. Always looking to help others, Emily would give her very last.
Emily Chisholm believed in making each day count. She lived with a sense of purpose and will be remembered for her fun-loving and carefree spirit. Emily had a charming smile and always had a sunny disposition even during life's most challenging moments. She was a constant reminder to us to live our lives to the fullest. She loved to travel with family and friends, often visiting destinations such as Cancun, Mexico and Las Vegas, NV. To know Emily, was to love her, as her fun-loving personality was infectious. She was the person whom many called on for words of encouragement, share a laugh or to hear one of her many stories known to us as "Emilyisms".
Emily S. Chisholm is preceded in death by her parents and son, Kevin Chisholm. She is survived by her daughter Erika Chisholm of Atlanta; 7 siblings: Edith S. Hagans, Leroy Singleton, Jr., Harold Singleton, Pearl S. Reddick, Walter Singleton, Savannah, GA; Rosemary Whitson, Bowie, MD; Carol Montgomery, Fairburn, GA; a grandson, Antwan Chisholm, Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law: Pauline Singleton; Serdalia Singleton and LaRosa Singleton, Savannah, GA; aunts Bernice Smith and Alethea Leake, Washington, DC; uncle John Greene, New York, NY; a host of nieces, nephews, and close family friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the Savannah State University Alumni Association.
