Mrs. Elinor Atkins Fowler

MRS. ELINOR ATKINS FOWLER of 602 Concord Lake Lane, Smyrna, GA passed away Friday, June 27,2014. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Warren Memorial United Methodist Church, 181 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Donald K. Reed, Sr., Pastor officiating. Interment, South-View Cemetery. The remains will be placed in state at the church at 10:00 a.m. Eta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will hold an Omega Rho Ceremony on Wednesday (this evening) at our chapel at 5:00 p.m. The family invites friends to join with them and sorority members for the Omega Pho Ceremony. A wake will be held at 6:00 p.m. Elinor was born in Atlanta, GA to the late Arthur James and Gleanor E. Atkins. She attended Oglethorpe and Frank L. Stanton elementary schools and graduated from L. J. Price High School in 1960. Elinor graduated from Spelman College in 1964. After receiving a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling, she served in the Atlanta Public School System as a music teacher, social studies teacher, and as a Lead Reading Teacher and counselor for ten years. She was elected as Teacher of the Year at E. R. Carter Elementary School in 1973. She was joined in holy matrimony to Kenneth E. Fowler on July 3,1966. After Ken entered the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 1974, Elinor served as an Education Counselor with the Department of The Army at various posts in the United States and in Germany. She also was an Education Counselor for two years at Central Texas University. She rendered Christian service to her church and opened her home for years for Disciple Bible Study groups. She served as Basileus of Eta Sigma Chapter, Sigma Gamma Rho sorority. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Kenneth E. Fowler and a host of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gleaner E. Atkins Scholarship Fund at Warren Memorial United Methodist Church, 181 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd., S.W., Atlanta, GA 30314.
