Mrs. Alice Cary Holmes Washington

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Alice Cary Holmes Washington will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:00AM at First Congregational Church, UCC, 105 Courtland Street, Southeast with Rev. Dr. Dwight D. Andrews, Pastor, officiating and Rev. Andrew Young, eulogist.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 12, 2015 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM in the chapel of Carl M. Williams Funeral Directors, Inc., 492 Larkin Street, Southwest, Atlanta, Georgia.

Alice Holmes Washington, 96, a retired educator, counselor, and community servant, passed on November 5, 2015.  She was born in East Point, GA to Dr. Hamilton Mayo Holmes, Sr.  and Patricia "Pattie" Reaves Holmes.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James C. "Jimmy" Washington, daughters, Patricia W. Clement, and Alice J. Washington.

Alice graduated from Spelman College (1938 B.S.) and Atlanta University, (1953 MS, EDS).

Mrs. Washington was respected throughout her career, by the community she advocated for as a teacher and counselor with the Fulton County Board of Education.   She was appointed to the Atlanta Fulton County Library Board of Trustees by former Mayor Maynard Jackson and she worked tirelessly to create community library facilities. One of her most notable achievements was her work with the establishment of the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History. Mrs. Washington was the first Black Officer of the State of Georgia's Parent Teacher Association.  Among her many awards were the Channel 11 Community Service Award, the Spelman College Founders Spirit Award, and most recently, The Sarah Grant and Lucetta Lawson "Service Above Self Award" in 2015 from Families First.

Alice was a charter member and former President of the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., former President of Chautauqua Circle, and a member of The Hyacinth Circle and 12 & 1 Bridge Club. She served on numerous professional and community boards. Alice was an active and lifelong member of First Congregational Church, U.C.C.

Alice, affectionately known as "Nana", will be missed and forever loved by her brother, Harold Holmes, daughter, Wynelle W. Scott, granddaughters, Anika Wharton (Steve), Morgan Smith (Quincy), and Carey Washington.  Great - grandchildren Pattie and Alex Wharton, Preston Lawson, and Kyleigh Smith and a host of other relatives and friends.
