Mrs. Grace Whatley Hinds

Mrs. Grace Whatley Hinds of Atlanta, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the age of 99.  Grace was born on February 26, 1918, the third child of Plemon Leon Whatley, Sr. and Mattie Jo Settles Whatley of Milner, Georgia in Pike County. 
Grace had an early calling to be a teacher and fulfilled her vocation after earning degrees from Fort Valley, Hampton Institute (University), and Columbia University in New York.  In the Atlanta School System, she served as teacher, librarian, assistant principal and principal in English Avenue, Finch or Center Hill Elementary Schools.

Grace is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 72 years-Thomas William Hinds of Mobile, AL, her brothers, Plemon Leon Whatley, Jr., Warren Settles Whatley, Sr., Charles Raven Whatley, Sr., Henry Lincoln Whatley and her sister Lucy Whatley.  She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Gail Hinds Reid, Vera Grace Hinds Plummer; grandchildren, Christopher Reid, Michael Reid, Carlton Plummer, Ginger Plummer Mair (Kevinn); great-granddaughters, Lillian Grace Mair and Keri Ann Mair

Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 551 Harwell Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. Rev. Jerome McKenna will officiate.  The remains will lay in state at the church from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.  Her remains may be viewed between 2:00p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at our chapel, 492 Larkin St., SW
