Jerry was my elegant, joyous, kind and lovely friend. We met at Ye Olde Tripple Inn, where my friends and I were “Jerry’s Kids” and “The Starsearch Table”. Recently we stayed connected via Twitter. I just tonight learned of his passing. New York will be more of an “Ugly Old Town” without him. I will go now and play that video again, and think of Jerry with Infinite Love And Gratitude.

I knew Jerry from 1986 through '89 or so when he MC'd the musical variety shows of Ye Olde Tripple Inn, on west 54th street in Manhattan. For a brief period, I co-produced a cabaret show in lower Manhattan and Jerry MC'd that show.

He had a shining smile and an elegant spirit that could light up a room, both onstage and off. In that period of the late '80s, I once saw him sing one number accompanied by a jazz pianist who played at an obscure, late night club. If my memory is correct, the two musicians met for the first time that night, and Jerry sang a song that was tight, expressive and beautiful.

I wish I could remember the name of the song, the club, or the pianist. I do remember it was a sharp, thrilling moment of melody expressed with creative spontaneity and joy.

A few years ago, Jerry and I reconnected through Facebook. We were able to meet up soon after when I visited NYC to see family. About a year ago, with Christmas a few weeks away, he and I met up at a club in Harlem where he performed with a pretty hot jazz ensemble. At his request, I recorded a video of his performance with his cell phone.

My wife Karen met Jerry during several of our NYC visits. Jerry was always welcoming, loving and charming.

I am so deeply sorry to learn about the death of your loved one Jerry. I know that this is a difficult time for you but please know that our loving heavenly father Jehovah assures us that the time will come when we will see our loved ones again by means of the resurrection. John5:28-29 Can you imagine the joy that will fill our hearts at that time? Yes, we will have the chance to see them and we will never have to worry about things such as death, pain or sorrow ever again! Rev21:3-4 What a wonderful time that will be! Once again I am sorry for your loss!

When I met Jerry on September 15, 1984,, at New York's Ye Old Tripple Inn, we soon became good friends. As the M.C. there,, he liked the songs I had brought with me from Holland and said "Come back next week!" So I did and not long after he started performing 2 of my songs and kept on doing so through the following decades.
"Ugly old town" can be heard at: https://youtu.be/AI4VJ57gweY .
A music clip of "Some incredible luck" will follow soon.
Dedicated to my soul brother in music,
Gerrit Vennema, The Hague, Holland.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. We can look forward to the promise at Isaiah 25:8 – “God will swallow up death forever, Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.” Death is an enemy that separates us from our loved ones. When this promise is fulfilled, we will have the joy of seeing our loved ones resurrected (John 5:28, 29) and enjoy life the way our Grand Creator purposed for us…forever on earth. (Matthew 5:5)

The first telegraph I ever received was from Jerry wishing me a happy birthday. Meeting Jerry at a Sunday school convention in Atlanta, becoming pen pals, losing contact and finding each other again and remaining lifetime friends was a joy to me. We shared so much. We laughed, cried, gave each other advice. There's not enough space and time to explain what dear friends we were. I believe and know in my heart that someday we'll see other again in spirit. Infinite Love and Gratitude.

I first met Jerry when we were in a show together. It was my very first job on stage. Jerry was such a light and gave me the confidence to do my very best. We recently reconnected through Facebook and he picked up where he left off with me in 1977...giving me wonderful light and joy and support in my life. The world is a less happy place with Jerry gone but I pray for his joy in heaven. I know everyone up there with him will be happier with his soul among them.

After performing brilliantly in many productions at Atlanta's Manhattan Yellow Pages, a musical cabaret in Atlanta which I owned, Jerry went on to great success in New York and beyond. Jerry was the thread who kept all the Yellow Pages performers connected for over 40 years. He created and maintained the Manhattan Yellow Pages page on Facebook and on the Sunday before his passing joined all of us for a reunion at Serenbe in Atlanta. He was so very happy and only a day later, found his wings. We will miss his laughter, his love of life, his voice. We will miss him.

I am very sorry for your loss. But Almighty God has set up a Kingdom ruled by Christ. (Psalm 83:18; Daniel 2:44) It will begin ruling over the earth soon. In it, we will never have to mourn the loss of our loved ones again. (Rev. 21:4) And John 5:28, 29 tells us that Jesus will call and our lost loved ones will rise again. It will be a happy day when we can welcome them back. I hope this brings you comfort.

We shared laughter, memories, happy tears, and lots of hugs at The Manhattan Yellow Pages reunion just a day before your passing. I cherish those photos and the new memories we created that day. I continue to watch your videos....taking off in a jet as you left NYC for the last time, your visit to your family's church, the MYP reunion in full swing, your performance at The Fox Theater where we shared the stage years ago. I still look for your 11 o'clock number, your inspiring messages, and your amazing perspective on life in The Big Apple. I will think of you every time I see a 'Forever blooming red geranium' (you know our special connection about that beautiful flower in your window). I will always remember our last song we sang together....'We've got magic to do, just for you. We've got miracle plays to play. We've got parts to perform. Hearts to warm. As we go along our way'. God speed, my friend. I love you, Jerry..
