Mr. James Howard Day of Atlanta, passed November 16, 2017.  Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 220 Auburn Ave., NE, with The Reverend John Foster, Ph.D., pastor, officiating.  Interment, Lincoln Cemetery.  The remains will lie in state at the church at 10 a.m.

James Howard Day was born in Eatonton, Georgia August 13, 1926 to the late Fannie Reid Day and James Day. James was the second of two children, his sister Hazel Day Rozier preceded him in death. His education began at Ashby Street Elementary School (E.R. Carter Elementary School) and he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Atlanta, Georgia in the class of 1944. James furthered his education at Morris Brown College.

James met and married the love of his life, Sallie Stokes Day and they were married for sixty-two years and to that union, their daughter Terri Lynn Day was born.

James was a faithful Christian who was a member of St. Mark AME Church from an early age to adulthood. While a member of St. Mark, he was a member of the male Chorus. He later changed his membership to Big Bethel AME Church, where he also sang in the Male Chorus.

James served in the United States Army for two years. After his service to the country, James began his professional career at the United States Postal Service and retired in 1983, after over thirty years of service. After retiring from the United States Postal Service, he worked for Prudential Bache Securities.

James led an active life before and after retirement; he was a member of The Atlanta Club of Frontiers International, Incorporated.  He also enjoyed the camaraderie of his peers at the Bridge and Pinochle Club at the Harriet G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility until his death.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories a loving and devoted wife, Sallie Stokes Day; a daughter, Terri Lynn Day; a devoted nephew Larry Varner (Amethyst); nieces Faye Hutchinson; LaVedia Varner Johnson, and Nicole Barnes; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
