I was greatly shocked and saddened today when I read of Dr. Thomas' death.  I am a diversity practitioner whose work was greatly influenced by his seminal book in 1985, and by many of his writings since.  I had the occasion to hear him speak once when he was in the Twin Cities.  This is such a huge loss for this community, and for the larger communities of which he was a part.  I am so grateful for what he gave to all of us in his lifetime, and hope his family can take comfort in knowing how many thousands of lives he and his idea and life's work have touched.

Dear Ruby,
You may not remember me, but I worked for Dr. Thomas in the early 2000's. I always admired him as a man of integrity, honesty and one who truly believed in and embodied the meaning of diversity. I will always consider it an honor to have worked for him. My prayers are with you and the children at this time. I pray that God's love, mercy, grace and comfort will surround you in the coming days and weeks.

In Him,

Dr. Thomas put a dent in the universe. May the family find a measure of peace in the loving support of family and friends, along with the promise (John 5:28, 29) "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life. . ."

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your loss.  I appreciated getting to know Roosevelt; first from afar...listening to and appreciating his insights and perspectives and then later as colleagues.  It was my great honor to have known and worked with him.  I will miss him and will be praying for your family as you go through this tremendously difficult time. Dear Mrs. Ruby and Thomas Family,

We are truly saddened by the loss of our friend, colleague and former SHRM Board member, Dr. Roosevelt Thomas. He was truly a giant and legend in the field of Diversity Management. We all appreciate his commitment of time, thought leadership, and innovative solutions to how we should all think about transforming our organizations with an inclusive lense. He made our world a better place because he shared his gifts and talents.

May he rest in peace and may his legacy live on. We have posted a formal tribute on our website at www.shrm.org and we plan to honor him in many other ways in our publications, conferences, and seminars. The work we did in partnership with him and AIMD has been a Game Changer for our field and we will continue to carry on the great work that we begun in 2007.

With sincerest sympathy,

Shirley Davis and the entire SHRM family

My sincere condolences to the family. I wish you peace and comfort over the coming months and years. May your memories of life together continue to provide joy and inspiration. I knew Roosevelt through his work, through attending a conference early on at AIMD, and through participation in the early years of the Diversity Collegium. It is clear that Roosevelt made an impression on those with whom he came into contact throughout his life and that his efforts to create a better future in which everyone had the opportunity to excel and prosper were influential and continue to shape the policies and practices of corporate and professional life. His was a life well lived, and his legacy will continue to have great impact as others carry on his work and continue to draw insight from his ideas and vision.

What a privilege it was for me to have known Dr. Roosevelt Thomas. I was honored to served as a member of the Diversity Collegium from 1994 to 2002 and always admired the brilliance and vision of Roosevelt. He co-founded the Collegium, and his systems and perspective are deeply embedded in the modern diversity and inclusion movement today.

He will be missed by all of us, but never forgotten.  My thoughts and prayers go with his beloved wife, Rudy, children, grandchild, and extended family members.

Dear Ruby and Thomas Family,

Myra and I are heartbroken over the loss of our friend, colleague and mentor, Roosevelt. Words cannot express how empty and saddened we feel with his loss. He was loved and held in high esteem by us and so many others. He gave so much to the world and was a guiding light for so many of us. It is an honor and privilege to have known and worked with him. Roosevelt taught and modeled an unparalleled blend of wisdom, integrity, compassion and humility. He is and always will be a role model and mentor for my life. Myra and I remember fondly spending time with you (Ruby) and Roosevelt in Atlanta at your home and exchanging memories of our experiences. They are unforgettable pleasant memories we will always treasure. We want you to know we are always here for you if you need anything.

Roosevelt was a true servant leader for the Lord and showed by his example and dedication. He taught us how to be a good and faithful servant. He showed his love for his wife and family. I am sure the Lord is saying to him…well done. We are continuing to pray that the Lord wraps his arms around you and your family and give the comfort and support as only God can give during Roosevelt’s transition.

We will do whatever we can to keep his memory and awareness of his contributions alive.

With Love and Respect, Dr. Edward E. and Myra Hubbard.

Ruby and Family of Roosevelt.
He was my classmate, frat brother and friend. I'm glad for the Holiday dinner we shared at my sister's house last December where I learned (after all these years) that we had graduated in the same year from high schools with the same name in different cities. I share the grief at his transition but grateful for the magnitude of his beautiful mind and generous spirit. Indeed he modeled what Dr. King called three dimensions of a complete life in which the height, breadth and depth are equal.

I had the honor of getting to know Roosevelt over the past decade. He and I were part of a group of peers who got together once a year. Almost always Roosevelt was the first person I talked to at these meetings. He shared with me what he was working on and thinking about and I admired the amount of wisdom and thoughtfulness in those conversations.

Here's what I know: this man made a big difference in a world that needed his ideas and actions. Even though we can no longer access his mind and heart, his history of action will continue to resonate far into the future.

Mrs. Thomas, you and your entire family are in Mable and my prayers for special grace from God during this time. Dr. Thomas was a great friend who made major contributions to higher education and in the area of "diversity." Most importantly, be comforted in the reality that his having given his life to Christ, he is presently with the Lord; for the Scripture declares that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:8). As Believers in Christ, we have the blessed hope of seeing him again. God Bless.

It is with heartfelt sympathy, that I write this note of comfort to you.  I know you heard this all before.  However, I want to let you know that Dr. Roosevelt Thomas was one of the most remarkable men I've ever meant.  When I met him I was in my early twenties, attending one of his world renown Diversity Seminars at Moorehouse.  The way he spoke with such eloquence, his intellect and the way he carried himself with humility captured my attention like no one had before.  As a young African American male, he taught me how to truly understand, live and respect diversity in all dimensions. More important, the role I can play in making the world a better place. I have patterned much of my life after the lessons learned. He was wise, caring, and a gift to all who knew him. Tracy & Eileen Gray
Dear Ruby,
Eileen and I extend our profound condolences to you and your family. Roosevelt is a prophet of diversity and inclusion who reached out to a perplexed world with a message of love and forgiveness. In 1992, when Roosevelt, Marjorie and I wrote the book “Differences Do Make a Difference”, I began to refer to him as the Einstein of Diversity. My reference to his keen intellect made him give his easy smile and chuckle. He is a man fulfilled. He would say to me he was just doing God’s work to help people acknowledge the prophecy of the American Dream and reach their full potential. When I went through all of the classes of his Institute at Morehouse, I learned the wisdom he and his believers wanted to share with us in the kingdom of diversity and house of inclusion. Many generations to come will only know him from his powerful thoughts, books, disciples and benefactors. Eileen and I, as well as your other friends, know when we were with you both we were in the very presence of greatness personified.  You both share with us the energizing message of trust, truth and justice. I think to myself what a wonderful world.
Over the years, from boating on the lake, to many social, civic and HR events Eileen and I felt your love for Roosevelt and the blessed strength he received from you and your family. Both of you together, your presence at a personal level will always be a portrait of compassion and spirit. Eileen and I struggle with you on this road of despair. We also endeavor to celebrate Roosevelt’s life and know he is now teasingly in conversation with angles and Christ in heaven.

To Roosevelt's family.  Roosevelt was an anchor for many of us and will be missed.  Please allow me to share a poem that has sustained me in the loss of loved ones.  I have this posted where I see it daily and it reminds me that none of us dies as long as someone has us in their heart.  Roosevelt is eternal.

You’re My Guest in Thought

Once a day, and sometimes more,
You knock upon my daydream door,
And I say warmly, “Come right in.
I’m glad you’re here with me again!”
Then we sit down and have a chat.
Recalling this, discussing that.
Until some task that I must do
Forces me away from you.
Reluctantly I say good bye
Smiling with a little sigh.
For though my daydreams bring you near
I wish that you were really here
But what reality cannot change
My dreams and wishes can arrange
And through my wishing you’ll be brought
To me each day, a guest in thought

To the family of Dear Roosevelt Thomas;

I offer my sincere condolences to you on your loss.

Roosevelt and I were colleagues for many years in the Diversity Collegium.  There are not enough words to describe this special, special man.

Dr. Thomas was not only an amazing thought leader, he was a wonderful, kind and compassionate person, strong in his faith.
He has been called a gentle giant, working passionately and tirelessly for to make this world a more just and inclusive place for all.  Through story, metaphor and allegory, Dr. Thomas helped us all better understand how inclusion really was the way to enhance performance, resolve conflict and work more effectively together.

He will be missed but as the African proverb says:  "A man is not dead until he is forgotten". Dr. R. Roosevelt Thomas will not be forgotten.

May God continue to bless you and your family at this difficult time.

I am so sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Thomas.  I have recently been working on trasitioning into a diversity role and had been referred to him.  I had no idea that he was a thought leader in the field.  He had been so kind as to take under his wing and allow to me to attend his training and conduct some research for him.  All of which has helped me a long my way.  I only knew him for a short time, but I feel lucky to have an the opportunity to work with such a great scholar and practioner.

Dear Family of Roosevelt Thomas,
It is with such sadness I hear the news of Roosevelt's passing. I was a student of his from Spelman College, taking classes in business at Morehouse. He taught me Economics and Accounting and is the reason I went into business following graduation. Since then, Roosevelt and I remained colleagues and good friends as a result of his work in the mid-80's at Avon, where he inspired many a young manage in the art of leading and managing. And, of course, I was there when he launched the premier Diversity Institute.
He will be missed by many, my thoughts and prayers go out to you Ruby and your family as you mourn the loss of your loved one and such a dear and distinguished man!
With great sympathy,
Yvonne R. Jackson
